Guide to Making Your Own Mailing Labels

Mailing labels are a surefire way to impress the recipient of your letter, but sometimes the plan may backfire. You may be trying to jazz up your envelope by having your label have shocking colors, crazy-looking font and a stylized picture, but there is such thing as overdoing it. When personalizing your own mailing labels, you have to strike the right tone in order to further encourage the recipient to read and be enthusiastic about your letter. You don’t want to confuse the post office, either, which is why there are several guidelines you must know while making your labels.

First of all, you have to decide the ’settings’ of your labels. Whether you have special label-making software or not, you must use designs and fonts that will not clash with each other or confuse anyone. Mailing labels will be the first thing your recipient sees, so it is good to be aware of your primary objective. Do you plan to make your labels colored? Are you making company labels or signature labels? These questions must be answered before you can actually start. Also, it is important to be completely aware of your end goal, which is to make good labels.

Mailing labels involve the following aspects: design, font, colors and the adhesive. Design indicates the style of the mailing label and the picture (or background picture) that comes with it. If you are making labels for your company, then the best choice of picture is to use, of course, the company logo itself. This helps your company become more recognizable, and it adds to the formality of the letter. On the other hand, if you are making labels just for yourself, then you should match the picture to the subject of the letter. Party or wedding invitations should have the appropriate picture (such as balloons, or a cake, or wedding bells, etc.). If you want to insert your trademark instead (such as a drawing of yourself) then feel free to do so. If you are inviting people to formal events, then pictures are not required.

When considering the font of your mailing labels, it is best to only use irregular or crazy-looking font if your letter is informal. Company letter fonts should be regular and orderly, and for formal parties, cursive font is usually used.

The colors of everything on your labels should contrast with each other nicely, and not clash to produce a shocking effect. Black and white are ideal for formal letters, whereas informal party invitations can be colorful and zany. Lastly, make sure that the adhesive for your labels is strong enough. Printing on paper and using glue to stick labels on the envelopes isn’t recommended. Use either sticker paper, or find a powerful adhesive that can withstand being thrown around constantly, while your letter is in a mailbag. Be sure to hint to your recipient what the contents of the letter will be. Buy keeping these guidelines in mind, your mailing labels will be fully appreciated by the recipient.
